Biography: Pablo Picasso (1881-1973, Spain) was born in Malaga, Spain. He first studied art under his father, Jose Ruiz, who was a painter and art professor. He later studied at the Academy of Arts in Madrid, but left after one year. In the pre-war years, he divided his time between Madrid and Paris. Picasso's artwork went through several periods: Blue and Rose (1901-1907), African (1908-1909), and Cubist (1909-1919). From the 1920s on, he painted in a style combining abstract, surrealistic, and neo-classical influences. Picasso is most closely associated with Georges Braque with whom he founded the Cubism school of art. He died in 1973 at the age of 92 in Mougins, France. (Return to Top.)
