Biography: Alphonse Mucha was was born in 1860 in Moravia in what was then the Austro-Hungarian Empire (now the Czech Republic), and died at the age of 78 in 1939.He started out painting theatrical scenery, and later attended the Munich Academy of Fine Arts. In 1887, he went to Paris, where he began his career as a poster artist. Mucha is generally credited with founding the the Art Nouveau (or "New Art") art style, which was originally called the "Mucha style."

Other artists who worked in the Art Nouveau style included Henri de Toulouse Lautrec, Gustav Klimt, Privat Livemont, Aubrey Beardsley, and Koloman Moser. While Mucha's art style was considered old fashioned during the latter part of his life (during the Art Deco era), it was later to influence the psychedelic poster artists of the 1960s.

Denounced as a reactionary Slavic nationalist, Mucha was arrested and "interrogated" by the Gestapo after the Germans invaded Czechoslovakia in 1939, and died less than four months later.
