Biography: Leonardo (de ser Piero) da Vinci was born in 1452 in Vinci, in the province of Firenze (Florence), in modern day Italy. The name, da Vinci, simply identifies where he was from ("Leonardo of Vinci"). He died in 1519 at the age of 71 in the town of Amboise, near Tours, France. Da Vinci was apprenticed at the age of 14 to the Florentine painter, Andrea del Verrocchio. He painted the Last Supper in 1498 while living in Milan, where the Duke of Milan, Ludovico Sforza, was his patron from 1482 to 1499. He painted the Mona Lisa between 1502 and 1506 in Florence, where he served Cesare Borgia as a military engineer. Da Vinci was in Rome while Michelangelo and Raphael were working there. He spent the last three years of his life in Amboise, France, where he lived in a house next to the summer residence of Francois I, King of France, from whom he received a pension.
