Biography: Jan (Johannes) Vermeer was born in 1632 in Delft, Netherlands, where he was to live his whole life. He died in 1675 at the age of 43. His father was a silk weaver, inn keeper, and art dealer, and Vermeer inherited the family businesses when his father died. Vermeer possibly apprenticed under the Dutch painter Carel Fabritius or Leonard Bramer, although little is known for sure about Vermeers training as an artist. In 1653 Vermeer joined the Saint Luke's Guild, a trade association for painters. He was elected head of the guild in 1662, testifying to his being established as a recognized painter. In the last years of his life, however, he fell into financial debt, due to the financial crisis that followed the French invasion of the Netherlands in 1672. He died three years later, at the relatively young age of 43, which his wife attributed to stress due to his financial situation. Vermeer was not well-known outside Delft during his lifetime, with many of his paintings purchased by a single patron. He has since been recognized as one of the great painters of the Golden Age of the Dutch Rennaisance, second only to Rembrandt van Rijn in importance. Other notable Dutch and Flemish painters contemporary with Vermeer include Frans Hals and Jan Steen. Click any thumbnail to view a larger version or make a purchase.
