Biography: Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1844-1919, France) was born in Limoges, France. From working class parents, he worked as a youth in a porcelain factory, painting designs on china. He began studying painting in Paris in 1862 under the academic painter, Charles Gleyre.
Renoir exhibited six paintings in the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874, after which he became identified as one of the principal Impressionist painters, along with Claude Monet and Edgar Degas.
In later life, Renoir developed rheumatoid arthritis, which caused him to move to the south of France in search of warmer weather. Eventually, he had to have his brush strapped to his hand to paint. One of his three sons, Jean Renoir, became a noted film director. He died at the age of 78 in 1919 in Cote d'Azur, France. (Return to Top.)
