Biography: Claude Monet (1840-1926, France) was born in Paris, France. He was influenced by Edouard Manet early in his career. It was from Monet's painting, Sunrise, Impression, that Impressionism took its name. Monet believed in painting directly from life, en plein air, which was to typify many of the principal Impressionist painters, such as Camille Pissaro, Pierre-Auguste Renior.

In his later years, Monet was afflicted with deterioted vision, due to cataracts, which led him to adopt a more simplified, colorful, and expressive painting style, verging on abstraction, in contrast to the more representational style that typified many of his early works. Monet died in 1926 at the age of 86, in Giverny, France.
