Biography: Andrew Wyeth was born as Andrew Wyetha in 1917 in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvannia. Wyeth was home taught and learned art from his father, N.C. (Newell Convers) Wyeth, who was a well-known illustrator. He was successful from the start, selling out his first one-man show in New York at the age of 20. In 1948 he painted his most famous work, Christina's World, picturing a young crippled woman, Christina Olson, contorted in trying to pull herself up a grassy hill, atop of which in the distance is shown a house and barn. Andrew Wyeth is the most important figure in the Contemporary Realism school of painting. Other Contemporary Realists include Ray Ellis, Pauline Campanelli, Ray Hendershot, as well as Andrew Wyeth's son, Jamie Wyeth. Click any thumbnail to view a larger version or make a purchase.
