Biography: Edward Hopper was born in 1882 in Nyack, New York. He died in 1967 in New York City. Hopper studied art at the New York School of Art, where he came under the tutelage of Robert Henri, who also taught and influenced several members of what was to be called the Ashcan School, including John Sloan and George Bellows. Hopper is sometimes thought of as belonging to the Ashcan School, but while there are obvious affinities between his work and that of the Ashcan artists, its lack of clear social commentary and greater universality marks Hopper's art as clearly distinct. Hopper is clearly influenced by the American realist masters, Winslow Homer and Thomas Eakins, although the ambience of his paintings is much more modern. Check out our
