Biography: Rene Magritte was born in 1898 in Lessines, Belgium. He died in 1967 at the age of 68 in Brussels. He studied art at the Academie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels for two years and then worked in a wallpaper factory and as a designer of posters and advertisements. Magritte painted his first surrealist work in 1926 and moved to Paris shortly afterward, where he became involved with the group of surrealist artists surrounding Andre
Breton, including Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Giorgio di Chirico, Man Ray, and other members of the Surrealism movement. His work is marked by an often witty juxtaposition of commonplaces, be they a pipe, apple, bowler hat, dove, or other object.
He spent WWII in Belgium under German occupation, which caused a break between him and Andre Breton and his circle. He has since become one of the most reknowned Surrealist artists. Check out our
