Biography: Salvador Dali was born in 1904 in Figueres, in Catalonia, Spain. He died at the age of 84 in 1989 in Figueres. After studying drawing as a youth, Dali studied art starting in 1922 at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts in Madrid, which is where he met the poet Federico Garcia Lorca and the filmmaker Luis Bunuel. Initially influenced by the Cubism and Dada art movements, Dali was expelled from San Fernando in 1926 after refusing to take the final exams, stating that no one there was competent to examine him. Also in 1926, he visited Paris where he was introduced to Pablo Picasso by his fellow Spaniard, Joan Miro. Dali's painting was heavily influenced by Picasso over the next several years. Dali came under the influence of the Surrealism movement starting in 1928-29, painting his Surrealist masterpiece, Persistance of Memory, in 1931.
