Biography: Jules Cheret was born in 1836 in Paris, France. He died in 1932 in Nice, on the French Riviera. He was apprenticed to a lithographer at the age of 13 and took an art course at the Ecole Nationale de Dessin, which was the sum total of his art training. While striving to be a serious painter, he was able to make a living designing posters, for which he is reknowned today. Cheret was an innovator in using lithography to produce multi-colored posters, eventually establishing his own lithography studio. Cheret was the most prolific of poster designs, creating over 1,000 posters in his lifetime. He was influenced by the Rococco style of Jean-Honore Fragonard and Jean-Antoine Watteau while creating poster advertisements for the Follies Bergere, the Moulin Rouge, and other Paris cabarets and music halls, as well as for liquors, soaps, perfumes, and other products. Cheret, being the oldest as well as the most long-lived of the Parisian poster artists, influenced many other poster artists, including Henri Toulouse-Lautrec. One of his students was the poster and fine artist Georges Feure. Satisfaction is guaranteed.* Orders are 100% secure.* Click any thumbnail to view a larger version or make a purchase.
