Biography: Theophile Steinlen was born in 1859 in Lausanne, Switzerland. He died in 1923 in Paris, France. After taking university classes in Lausanne, he trained to become a textile designer. Encouraged in his artistic pursuits by the painter Francois Bocion, he moved to the Montmarte neighborhood of Paris in his early 20s, where he associated with a group of artists at Le Chat Noir cabaret and which led to his first poster commission. Stylistically, he's considered to belong to the Art Nouveau art movement. Besides poster design, Steinlen also created paintings and scupture, as well as magazine illustration. In the early 1890s, he exhibited paintings in the nudes, still lifes, and landscapes in the Salon des Independants.
