Capitalizing on his success as a poster designer, Cassandre set up his own advertising agency. He also designed typefaces and taught graphic design. His designs are noted for their bold composition, with a clear inspiration from 20th century art movements, especially Pablo Picasso and Cubism.

During World War II Cassandre served in the French army until the collapse of France, after which, following a collapse in the advertising business, he worked creating theatre set designs.
