Hohlwein was the main representative of the Plakatstil ("Poster Style") movement in Germany and Austria, a term which is a take-off on the Jugenstil ("Youth Style") fine art movement in the early part of the 20th century. Compared to Art Nouveau, works in the Plakatstil style are more realistic, simpler, less ornate, and more modern.
Hohlwein's fine draughtmanship, painterly style, clarity of light and form, and deft use of color make his poster designs instantly recognizable. His posters were primarily advertisements, but he also created propaganda posters for the German government in World War I, as well as some posters for the Nazi government during World War II. His exquisite poster design, Riquetta, picturing an African woman in profile, however, would argue against any racial animus on his part. He died in 1949 in Berchtesgarden, Germany, at age 75.
