While continuing to strive to be a serious painter, Cheret was able to make a living designing posters. He was influenced by the Rococo style of Jean-Honore Fragonard and Jean-Antoine Watteau.

Cheret influenced many other poster artists, including Henri Toulouse-Lautrec. Cheret was an innovator in using lithography to produce multi-colored posters, establishing his own lithography studio. Cheret was the most prolific of poster designers, creating over 1,000 posters in his lifetime.
