Grun initially worked selling illustrations to magazines and designing stage sets - he began creating posters for theatres he'd designed stage sets for, beginning in 1892. Grun designed posters for Montmarte cabarets, revues, and shows, including the Moulin Rouge and Scala theatre revues. His posters were printed by Impremerie Chaix, for which Jean Cheret was the artistic director.
Besides being a poster designer, Grun also worked as a serious painter, exhibiting works in the Paris Salon starting in 1885. In his painting, End of Dinner, among the characters depicted include Guillemet, Cheret, Grun (slightly obscured by Cheret, a form of tribute), and Grun's wife, Juliette Toutain-Grun.
