Biography: Joan Miro (1893-1983, Spain) was born in Barcelona, Spain. Miro studied art at the Escola d'Art in Barcelona from 1912 to 1915. In 1920, Miro moved to Paris, where he met Pablo Picasso, forming what was to become a life-long friendship. He was influenced early by Paul Cezanne and the Fauvists. In 1924, he joined and began exhibiting with the Surrealist group formed around Andre Breton in Paris.

While generally included within the Surrealism school, Miro himself didn't identify himself as belonging to any school of art. Miro was also influenced by the Dada art movement. Besides Picasso, Miro also associated with other prominent members of the Surrealism school of art, including Salvador Dali, Rene Magritte, and Max Ernst. Miro died in 1983 at the age of 90 in Palma, Mallorca.
