Biography: Sandro Botticelli (1445-1510, Italy) was born in Florence. Initially trained as a goldsmith, Botticelli apprenticed to the Florentine master painter Fra Filippo Lippi. He was also influenced by Lippi's contemporary, Masaccio. In 1470, he started his own studio. Among his most prominent patrons were the Medicis and Pope Sixtus IV.

In later life, Botticelli became a follower of Savonarola, with his later works featuring religious themes more frequently. He is said to have burned several of his earlier "pagan" paintings in the Bonfire of the Vanities. Botticelli's work is characterized by its gracefulness of line and contour. His figures tend to be modeled in low relief, in contrast to the more dramatic relief (chiarscuro) of later painters. He died at the age of 65 in 1510.
