Biography: Henri Matisse was born in 1869 in Le Cateau-Cambresis, in the north of France. Initially studying law and working as a court administrator, Matisse took up painting after an illness. He studied art at the Academie Julian starting in 1891. First adopting the Pointilism of Paul Signac, after 1905, Matisse increasingly spent time in the south of France, associating with a group of painters who called themselves the Fauves (or "Wild Beasts").
The Fauves, including Andre Derain, Raoul Dufy, and Maurice Vlaminck, exulted in an often counter-representational use of brilliant colors, flattening the picture into planes, prefiguring the more purely abstract art styles that were to follow. Matisse died in 1954 at the age of 84 in Nice, France.
