Biography: John William Godward (1861-1922, England) was born in London, England. His father was an investment clerk. He was one of the followers of Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836-1912, Netherlands/England), called "The Marble School", for its penchant for including marbled stone architectural features in their pictures. He exhibited as at the Royal Academy from 1887. He is considered to be a Victorian Neo-Classicist, although he also has much in common with the Pre-Raphaelites. His family disapproved of his choice of art as a career - he moved to Italy with one of his models in 1912, hoping to escape their baleful influence. Following WWI, his style of painting had fallen out of fashion, in that it belonged to a world not just vanished, but vanquished. Unable to sell his paintings, he returned to England in 1921, where he committed suicide in 1922 at the age of 61, purportedly stating in his note that "the world is not big enough for myself and a Picasso". Following his suicide, his family destroyed his letters and photographs. (Return to Top.)
