John James Audubon was born in 1785 in Saint Domingue (now Haiti) as the illegitimate son of a French sea captain to a Creole mother. He died in 1851 in New York City. He studied art in Paris under the Neo-Classic painter Jacques-Louis David. He went to the United States in 1803 to manage a family farm close to Philadelphia. Robert Bateman was born in 1930 in North Toronto, Canada. While studying geography at the University of Toronto, he attended evening drawing classes. After graduating, he worked as a secondary school art and geography teacher for 20 years. Influenced by an exhibition of paintings by Andrew Wyeth, he began working in the more realistic vein depicting the natural world for which he is best known today. [More...]
