Biography: Felix Vallotton was born in 1865 in Lausanne, Switzerland. He died in 1925 in Paris, at age 60. In 1882, he moved to Paris to attend the Academie Julian, studying art under the traditional academic painters Jules Joseph Lefebvre and Gustave Boulanger. Following a large exhibition of Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1891, he began creating woodblock prints, reducing the picture plane to flat black and white areas, without middle-tones. He also designed posters in the 1890s (as did Henri Toulouse-Lautrec and Pierre Bonnard, for instance), which naturally tended toward the simplification of the picture into flat color planes. This reductionism was later applied to his paintings, in the form of flat areas of color with minimal modeling, in many ways anticipating the realist reductionism of an Edward Hopper some 20 years later, although there is little likelihood he had any direct influence. Vallotton is generally associated with the Le Nabis ("The Prophets") group of painters, which besides Bonnard, also included Paul Serusier, Edouard Vuillard, Maurice Denis, Aristide Maillol, and Paul Ranson, most of whom had attended the Academie Julian.
