Biography: Paolo Uccello was born in 1397 as Paolo di Dono in Pratovecchio, near Arezzo, in Italy, and died in 1475, aged 77 or 78. His nickname, Uccello, was given to him for his proclivity to paint birds (Uccello meaning "bird" in Italian). His father was a barber-surgeon, while his mother was from a leading Florentine family. He was apprenticed to the scuptor Lorenzi Ghiberti in Florence at the age of ten, and not long after he formed a life-long friendship with another famous sculptor, Donatello. By the mid-1420s, he had left Ghiberti's studio and concentrated on painting. Uccello was one of the first painters to seriously study and apply perspective in composing his pictures. In the mid-1450s, he painted his masterpiece, The Battle of San Romano, depicting the victory of the Florentine army over the Sienese in 1432, in the Palazzo Medici.
