Biography: Giovanni Battista (Giambattista) Tiepolo was born in 1696 in Venice. He died in 1770 in Madrid, Spain, aged 74. His father, a sea captain, died a year after his birth, leaving his mother to raise him and five other siblings under straightened circumstances. He initially learned his art from Gregorio Lazzarini, Sebastiano Ricci, Giovanni Battista Piazzetta, and other contemporary Venetian painters. He was accepted into Venice's guild of painters (the Fraglia) in 1717 and married Maria Cecilia Guardi, sister of the painters Francesco Guardi and Giovanni Antonio Guardi. He received many commissions to paint frescoes and large canvases to decorate palaces, churches, chapels, ceilings, and salons in Italy, Germany, and Spain, featuring religious, classical, and mythological themes. Tiepolo's sons, Lorenzo Baldissera Tiepolo and Giovanni Domenico (Giandomenico) Tiepolo also became painters of some note. Check out our Custom Framing options!
