Biography: Peter Paul Rubens was born in 1577 in Siegen, Westphalia, in what is now present day Germany, to a Calvinist father and a Catholic mother. After his father died when he was 12, he and his mother moved to Antwerp in Belgium, where he was raised as a Catholic. Starting at the age of 14, Rubens apprenticed in the studios of Adam van Noort and Otto van Veen (1556-1629). After setting up his own studio, he traveled widely in Italy studying the paintings of the masters of the Italian Renaissance. One of his most important students was Anthony Van Dyke (1599-1641). Stylistically, Rubens is considered to be one of the principal members of the Baroque movement. He died in 1640 from gout at the age of 62.
