Biography: Diego Rivera was born in 1886 in Guanajato, Mexico. He died in 1957 at the age of 70 in Mexico City. Rivera studied art at the Academy of San Carlos in Mexico City. In 1908, he went to Barcelona, Spain, and then to Paris, France, to further his artistic development, remaining there for the next decade. He was initially influenced by Neo-Impressionism and Cubism. In Paris, Amedeo Modigliani was also a close friend of Rivera.
He returned to Mexico in 1921 to paint murals for public buildings, including the University of Mexico, in which he perfected Social Realist style for which he's best known. He married the artist Frida Kahlo in 1929. During his exile in Mexico, Leon Trotsky lived at the Riveras' home for a time (Trotsky was later assasinated). His wife, Frida Kahlo, died in 1954, and Rivera died three years later. Check out our
