Biography: Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio or Santi) was born in 1483 in the Duchy of Urbino, in the Marche region, Italy. He died in 1520 in Rome at the age of 37. It was from his father, Giovanni Santi, who was a painter in the court of the Duke of Urbino and who had studied under Piero della Francesca, that Raphael received his first instruction in art. His father placed him as an assistant in the workshop of Pietro Perugino to help further his training. Raphael was orphaned when his father died when he was 11 (his mother had died three years earlier), but his father's workshop continued under the supervision of his step-mother. He became a master in his own right in 1501, taking over sole management of the workshop as his own. In 1508, Raphael moved to Rome where Pope Julius II and Pope Leo X were his patrons. Raphael, who had never married, died from a sudden fever at the age of 37 following a night with his lover, La Fornarina (Margherita).
