Biography: Rafal Olbinski was born in 1945 in Kielce, Poland. He studied architecture at the Warsaw Polytechnic School. He soon realized, however, that the world of architecture would not allow him to express his creative vision and turned instead to designing his visions in two, rather than three, dimensions.
He emigrated to the United States in 1982 and has been a professor at the School of Visual Arts in New York City since 1985. Best known for his surrealistic opera and theatre posters, he has also produced paintings, lithographs, and opera stage set designs. Olbinski's are salted with poetic humor ("I always wanted to be a poet" - Olbinski).
While Olbinski has been clearly been influenced by the great Belgian surrealist, Rene Magritte, he has gone on to create a uniquely personal style and body of work. Check out our
