Nude Art created dating back millenia. The Greeks and Romans studied the human figure extensively, but until Renaissance artists, such as Botticelli, returned to working "from life," later artists relied on classical models or imagination. Michelangelo is said to have used male models for his female nudes, which helps explains their beefiness. Nudes were almost always presented as part of biblical, mythological, or historical themes. Manet caused a scandal when, in Luncheon on the Grass, he placed his nude in a public park in the company of fully clothed contemporary males, enjoying a simple picnic.
