Biography: Franz Marc was born in 1880 in Munich, Germany. He died in 1916 while serving in the German Army in WWI. His father was a painter. Marc initially studied theology and philosophy, but switched to studying painting in 1900 at the Munich Academy of Fine Art, where his father was a professor. He is best known for his expressionistic paintings of horses and other animals. He was one of the founding members of the Blue Rider (Blaue Reiter) group of painters, which also included Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, August Macke, Alexej Jawlensky, and Lyonel Feininger.
