Biography: Tamara de Lempicka was born Maria Gorska in 1898 to a rich family in Warsaw, Poland, then annexed by the Russian Empire. She was educated in a boarding school in Switzerland and traveled to stay with her grandmother in Italy. After her parents divorced when she was 14, she went to live with an aunt in St. Petersburg, Russia. At 18, she married Taduesz Lempicki, a social gadabout, racontuer, and lawyer, bringing a substantial dowery into the union. She was able to secure the release of her husband from imprisonment by the Bolsheviks during the revolution, after which they fled to Paris, where she gave birth to a daughter, Kizette. In Paris, she studied art under Maurice Denis and Andre Lohte at the Academie Ranson. Her primary influence was Pablo Picasso and, through him, Ingres, forming the perfect Art Deco recipe. One critic went so far as to refer to her style as a "perverted Ingrism". A liberated woman, she had lovers, divorced, and remarried a baron. She moved to Hollywood before the outbreak of WWII, then to New York. After the war, she returned to Paris, but then back to the U.S., to be closer to her daughter, and eventually to Cuernavaca, Mexico, where she died in 1980, aged 82. Her daughter is the Baroness Kizette de Lempicka-Foxhall, who has authored a biographical narrative on her mother's life. Check out our
