Biography: Frederick Leighton was born in 1830 in Scarborough, England, and died in 1895, aged 65, in London. After attending University College School, London, he studied art under Edward Jakob Steinle, and the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence. From 1855 to 1859, he lived in Paris, meeting Ingres, Delacroix, Corot, and Millet while there. After returning to London in 1860, he associated with the Pre-Raphaelites, taking from them their romanticism and love of the exotic. He preferred to refer to identify his own work as "aesthetic classicism." He was elected president of the Royal Academy in 1878. Check out our Custom Framing options!
