Biography: Jacques-Louis David was born in 1748 in Paris, France, and died in 1825. When he was nine, his father was killed in a duel, after which he was mostly raised and educated by his uncles. Preoccupied with drawing from an early age, David at first sought to study painting under the Rococo master Francois Boucher, but Boucher sent him instead to study at the Royal Academy (located in the Louvre) under Joseph-Marie Vien, whose classical was more in tune with the coming times. After failing to win the Prix de Rome five times, David finally won it on his fifth attempt in 1774, allowing him to study in Rome for five years. In
Rome, he met Anton Raphael Mengs, who is considered a precursor of the Neo-Classical style. David welcomed the French Revolution when it occured - he was a friend of Robespierre and a member of the Jacobin Club. As a member of the National Convention, he voted for the execution of Louis XVI. He was also a member of the Committee of General Security, which authorized the guillotining of Marie Antionette. After the arrest and execution of Robespierre, ending the Reign of Terror, David was himself arrested and jailed, although he was later released. David met and sketched Napoleon when he was still a general for the Republic. After Napoleon seized power, David painted Napoleon Crossing the Saint-Bernard Pass, showing him mounted on a rearing steed (he'd actually been mounted on an ass). When Napoleon declared himself Emperor, David became the regime's official painter. After the deposing of Napoleon and the crowning of Louis XVIII, David was offered amnesty and the position of royal painter, but he chose exile in Brussels, where he lived the rest of his life.
