Douglas Brega, American Contemporary Realist Artist: Two Lights Contemporary Realism arose in the mid- to late-20th century as a reaction against the non-representational and abstract emphasis of modern "contemporary art." Contemporary Realists' nostalgic focus on rural and country scenes has been taken by some as sentimental, while others see them as preservationists of a rapidly disappearing way of life. They also have brought a renewed emphasis on traditional painting techniques and craft, particularly in the mediums of watercolor and tempera. Some of the more important Contemporary Realists include Andrew Wyeth, Jamie Wyeth, Ray Ellis, Pauline Campanelli, Douglas Brega, and Ray Hendershot. Check out our Custom Framing options!
