Biography: John James Audubon was born in 1785 in Saint Domingue (now Haiti) as the illegitimate son of a French sea captain to a Creole mother. He died in 1851 at the age of 65 in New York City. He studied art in Paris under the Neo-Classic painter Jacques-Louis David.
Audubon's father sent him to the United States in 1803 to avoid serving in Napoleon's armies and to manage a family farm close to Philadelphia. While living there he began creating his paintings and illustrations of birds and other wildlife he would eventually become famous for. Other prominent naturalist artists include Prideaux John Selby, John Gould, Mark Catesby, John Gerrard Keulemans, Jacob Studer, George Shaw, Charles Murphy, and Roger Peterson.
